Exclusive: ‘Hekla’ Director Michael Glover Smith and Lead Actor Elizabeth Stam
There is everything and nothing unusual about the life of Hekla Gudmunsdottir (Elizabeth Stam). The main character in Michael Glover Smith’s newest film, Hekla, she is an actor looking for a role.
The film spans a full day of her search, mostly in a black-and-white cinema vérité kind of way. But every now and then, the thoughts in Hekla’s mind are revealed in brief and weird sequences of color. Full of memory and emotion, they remind viewers that experiences from the past affect what we say and do moving forward. No matter how typical a day may seem, there’s plenty of sound and fury upstairs.
NBC’s Richard Roeper described Hekla as, “a love letter to the actors out there who are talented but struggling.” It is one of three “Recommended” screenings in the Chicago Reader (along with Blue Heron and The Christophers). Stam won the “Big Damn Deal” award at the Covellite International Film Festival for her performance in the film.
Next up for Hekla: The film lands at Chicago’s Facets on June 4th then heads to New York on June 8th, with a busy slate of summer screenings to be announced very soon.
Below, Smith and lead actor Elizabeth Stam, who cowrote the script, talk about the labor and reward of creating one of Chicago’s most celebrated films.
