Chicago Filmmaker Phil Donlon Shifts the Lens on True Crime as EP of Amazon Studios’ ‘Killing Grounds: The Gilgo Beach Murders’

Chicago’s own Phil Donlon moves from the front lines of TV hit Chicago Fire to the executive producer’s chair in the highly anticipated four-part documentary series, Killing Grounds: The Gilgo Beach Murders.

Developed by Donlon and sold to Amazon Studios following the high-profile arrest of suspect Rex Heuermann, the series offers a definitive and deeply human examination of one of the most complex serial murder cases in American history.

The project’s inception began over a year ago when Donlon was pitched the story by a former FBI agent who had assisted in the forensic work on the case.

Recognizing the gravity of the material, Donlon spent a year meticulously developing the project, eventually partnering with acclaimed director Emma Cooper (The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe) and her production company, Empress Films.

While the Gilgo Beach case has been the subject of various media interpretations, Killing Grounds distinguishes itself through its intentional focus on the human stories of the victims rather than the salacious details of the crimes.

“We specifically focused on the victims and their families,” says Donlon. “This sets us apart from other versions made on this subject. For true crime aficionados and long-time followers of the case, the series will reveal new information that has never before been released to the public.”

Across four episodes, the documentary investigates the fifteen-year timeline of the case, highlighting the “systemic failures” by local police that allowed the investigation to stall for over a decade. It culminates in the scientific and investigative breakthroughs that led to the eventual arrest of Rex Heuermann.

For Donlon, the goal was always larger than mere storytelling; it was about advocacy.

“Whether I am in front of the camera or behind it, I am happy as long as I am telling a powerful story,” Donlon says. “I don’t always have a choice as an actor about what story I will tell, but as a producer, I have more control. I am hoping this series will provide some closure, or at least start that process, for the victims’ families.”

Donlon was born and raised in Chicago, getting his start on legendary stages such as The Organic Theater Co. and Wisdom Bridge in the 1990s. He is the founder of The Gilead Theater Co. and is currently known to television audiences for his recurring role as Lt. Vale on NBC’s Chicago Fire.

The success of Killing Grounds marks a significant expansion of Donlon’s production slate. He is currently partnered with Rolling Stone magazine and Rolling Stone Films to develop several of their investigative true-crime articles for the screen, continuing his commitment to high-stakes, narrative-driven non-fiction.

Killing Grounds: The Gilgo Beach Murders is now streaming globally on Amazon Prime Video.
