Illinois Film Festival Announces First Annual Celebration of Young Filmmakers

Illinois Film Festival today announced the launch of its first annual Illinois Film Festival, an exciting new platform dedicated to celebrating the creative work of young filmmakers up to age 24. The festival will take place on August 8, 2026, at the historic Wilmette Theatre in Wilmette, Illinois, offering a vibrant space for young directors, writers, actors, and visual artists to share their short films with the public.

The Illinois Film Festival is committed to empowering emerging talent in the heart of Illinois’ thriving arts community. The festival is now accepting submissions through Film Freeway, and eligible filmmakers are encouraged to review full submission guidelines at ilfilmfest.org/submission-guidelines. Submissions are open to filmmakers who live in Illinois or are students in the state, with categories including Live Action Short, Documentary Short, and Animated Short, each with a maximum runtime of 12 minutes. There is no submission fee.

“Our goal with the Illinois Film Festival is to create a dynamic and professional showcase where emerging voices can be seen, supported, and celebrated,” said Festival Founder Charles E. Hutchinson. “We believe the next generation of storytellers is brimming with fresh perspectives and bold ideas, and we are thrilled to bring their work to life on the Wilmette Theatre screen.”

Attendees can expect a curated program of innovative short films that reflect a broad range of genres, styles, and stories from young creators across the state. An awards program will recognize outstanding work across categories, including Best Live Action Short, Best Documentary Short, and Best Animated Short.

The Wilmette Theatre—one of the oldest continuously operating movie theaters in the country—provides a stunning and meaningful backdrop for this inaugural event. Its historic legacy and community-focused mission make it an ideal home for a festival dedicated to nurturing the next generation of filmmakers.

The Illinois Film Festival will also foster connection and celebration through audience engagement and filmmaker recognition. Additional festival programming, screening schedules, and event details will be announced in the coming months.
