To answer the question posed in the title, Schodorf journeyed deep into the heartland of a divided nation, capturing Americans’ intimate thoughts along the way. “Back in 2020, I had never met a Trump supporter while living in Chicago and often wondered where they all were,” he explains at the beginning of the film.
In a region of the country sometimes known as the Corn Belt, he finds them everywhere.
Why Trump? is impartial journalism on a controversial subject. Topics include the Tulsa Race Massacre, the abortion vote, and the decline of small-town America. Since its release in July, the film has been described as “a standout among documentaries.”
