On The Red Carpet With ‘Dead Man’s Wire’ Director Gus Van Sant
Director Gus Van Sant has created a mind-blowingly immense scope of films over his career. From Drugstore Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho to Good Will Hunting, Milk and dozens of others, he is one of the most successful yet least definable cinematic legends in the world. At the Chicago International Film Festival, Van Sant presented his latest, Dead Man’s Wire.
Based on an actual hostage-taking incident from the 1970s, Dead Man’s Wire tells the story of a desperate man with a grudge against a mortgage company. The title refers to a homemade contraption that connects a shotgun to a potential victim’s head and a potential killer’s finger. Despite the intense subject matter, one reviewer described the film as “brilliant and surprisingly hilarious.”
In addition to screening Dead Man’s Wire, the festival hosted a lifetime tribute for Van Sant at AMC Newcity on October 18. Screen correspondent Dan Patton spent a few moments with the director talking about the evolution of the film’s humor, among other things.
