‘The Bear’ Roars with a Whopping 13 Emmy Nominations

Is The Bear one of the most nominated series of the 2023 Emmys? Yes chef, it is! And that’s just for Season One.

The Made-In-Chicago FX dramedy about a fine dining chef forced to return home to take over his family’s Chicago-based sandwich shop, tallied a total of 13 nominations for the 75th annual Emmy Awards, coming in third behind The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 14 and Ted Lasso with 21.

And it’s worth noting this Emmy recognition for The Bear is for its first season. The series initially premiered in the summer of 2022, just a month into the eligibility period for the upcoming ceremony, which recognizes the best of TV from June 2022 to May 2023.

As all fans of the show are well aware, Season Two debuted last month to record viewership and even more critical adoration, so it’s reasonable to expect even more nominations on the menu for next year’s Emmys as well.

A Baker’s Dozen of Nominations for The Bear

As for those 13 nominations… not only is it up for Outstanding Comedy Series, but stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach all picked up acting nominations in the Outstanding Leading Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series categories, respectively.

Additionally, Jon Bernthal and Oliver Platt are both up for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for their roles as Carmy’s family members. The series also picked up writing and directing nods for creator Christopher Storer.

Most notable to Chicago TV fans should be the nomination for Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series, an honor shared by Chicago’s very own Paskal Rudnicke Casting. Cheers to Jennifer Rudnicke, CSA, Mickie Paskal, CSA, AJ Links, CSA, and the entire team! (Click here for AJ’s round of Five Questions with SCREEN from earlier this year!)

The 2023 Emmy Awards ceremony will air on Monday, September 18 on Fox.

On to Season Two

Season Two just dropped last month and the 70% spike in viewership, coupled with hearty servings of critical acclaim, have the series soaring on the heels of the season premiere.

Starring Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, The Bear follows a young, classically trained chef who returns home to Chicago to run his family’s Italian beef shop after his brother dies by suicide. The series also stars Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Edwin Lee Gibson, Abby Elliott, Corey Hendrix, Matty Matheson, Richard Esteras and Jose M. Cervantes.

As for the production of the show earlier this year, filming of Season Two throughout Chicago wrapped on April 25th, so the speedy turnaround to the June season premiere was particularly impressive. Here’s a look at the legendary locations in the mix this season, and more from production.
