Super Bowl Picks and Pans from VFX Guru Ryan Urban

Award-winning VFX Supervisor and artist Ryan Urban recently joined forces with NEXODUS to bring his world-class expertise in visual effects – which includes work with the Wachowskis on The Matrix Resurrections – to the next-generation VFX studio. So what did Ryan think of the gauntlet of Super Bowl advertising artistry on display Sunday? Let’s get to it!

SCREEN: What was your favorite spot of the Super Bowl?

RYAN: The Michael Cera CeraVe one. Overall it just cut through, and was clever and funny. I also just watched “Dream Scenario” and he has a great board room-like scene in that so maybe it felt extra fitting. Wicked’s teaser trailer gave me chills as soon as that music cue hit. Great timing to drop that along with their first look and first poster. I would have loved to work on that Crowdstrike one – a Western plus VFX heavy robots. I’m in!

SCREEN: What was your least favorite spot of the night or a spot you felt could have been more successful?

RYAN: That’s a tricky question. A few felt pretty neat but then they pointed to something ancillary online. Assume we never watch the other piece and put the goods in the main spot! Or maybe they did already use the best parts- then maybe there’s no reason to follow up to watch the online piece?

SCREEN: What would you like to see more or less of in terms of advertising in next year’s Super Bowl?

RYAN: Save the reveal! I wish they wouldn’t release some of the spots online a week before. If it’s intended for the Super Bowl, keep the first reveal for during the game, then release online. A few would have been even better to see first on the day.

SCREEN: Any final words here, Ryan?

RYAN: I loved the effort to get A-list talent across the board. Especially with the recent SAG strikes, it was great to see such big name talent sprinkled throughout.
