The Cultural Affairs Coordinator II position in the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) Arts and Creative Industries Division Chicago Film Office will serve the needs of the local film and media industry and be its advocate. In addition, the position will be a liaison with city government to create professional development tools and opportunities for convening and networking; collect and share industry data and promote film-making in Chicago, locally and nationally; and facilitate permit and operation concerns on behalf of local film and media productions. In this capacity, the position performs the following:

Coordinate city services, requirements, communications, and other details as needed to facilitate the making of locally produced feature films, documentaries, short films, student projects and other media
Conduct site visits, convene and attend industry programs, and provide outreach to film industry business leaders to capture and communicate priorities, develop working relationships, and galvanize support
Organize and manage professional development forums, panel discussions and conferences with film industry experts to strategize and share information to advance the film industry and boost the amount of filming in Chicago
Troubleshoot, provide technical assistance and support, evaluate the feasibility of production logistics, meet with industry leaders, and facilitate local production operational requests, permits, and city services
Help to develop, manage and see through implementation a framework and outline of programs and workshops designed to provide direction and networking opportunities for emerging and established local film makers
Assist in the development of promotional campaigns for Chicago by convening partnerships with stakeholders that have shared goals to increase the profile of the Chicago film industry
Research policies and review economic data as they relate to the film industry by reviewing reports, current laws and regulations, best professional practice standards, studies, data sets, and media publications, etc., and act as a liaison for the film industry to share research and information
Respond to inquiries, provide public service and information, and attend industry events such as industry conferences, film festivals, and organizational events
Help launch new initiatives and programs that are in alignment with DCASE’s Strategic Plan and Cultural Plan
Prepare status and wrap up reports with narrative, financial, and statistical components
May oversee and/or supervise temporary staff, including student interns
Assist with other DCASE events, programs, and activities
Perform related duties as required

NOTE: Must be able to work flexible hours to include mornings, weekends, evenings, and holidays


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Arts Administration, Liberal Arts or a directly related field, plus two years of program development or administration experience in the area of visual arts, performing arts or creative arts programming, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, provided that the minimum degree requirement is met.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Media. Communications, Arts Administration, or a directly related field

  2. Experience in film and media production

  3. Experience facilitating new program implementation and overseeing special projects

  4. Experience with City policies, regulations and procedures; government structure and protocol

  5. Familiarity with the local film and filmmaking community

  6. Computer software proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet research

  7. Experience with general office operations and duties

Other Requirements:

Must be creative and open to ideas across disciplines. Must be able to work flexible hours to include mornings, weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

Able to lift up to 20 lbs. Able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. Able to bend, lift, carry, and work indoors and outdoors.

Working Conditions:

Work indoors and occasionally outdoors in extreme weather conditions and noise. General office environment, using standard office equipment.


Knowledge and interest of the film industry and media. Some knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, codes, permits, and regulations for events. Some knowledge of best practices and industry standards.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with film makers, production crews, aldermen, and other city departmental personnel.
