News Editor

The Dissolve is looking for a full-time News Editor to oversee daily operations in the Newsreel section of the website, with a strong preference for candidates with the ability to work from either our Chicago or New York office. This position is responsible for generating and posting quick, short, responsive briefs about breaking news related to cinema throughout the day, Monday through Friday. The News Editor will coordinate with freelance and staff writers to ensure timely and frequent pieces throughout the workday, and will work closely with the Editorial Director to plan short, tonally appropriate features for the Newsreel section, and to maintain a consistent vision and voice for that section. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated deep interest in cinema, including business and production news, and will be able to talk knowledgeably and comfortably about movies past and present.

Responsibilities will include:

Aggregating news, generating new content from press releases, working with publicists, and putting an enthusiastic, personality-driven spin on new information
Writing many short, informed, responsive pieces throughout the workday
Coordinating and assigning freelancers who also contribute to the section
Fact-checking and editing freelance and staff writing
Collecting art and posting news in the CMS
Working with a Senior Editor and Social Media Manager to package news for social media


A strong voice and sense of personal identity that comes through in writing
Familiarity with The Dissolve content and editorial tone
Ability to manage and clearly communicate with other writers
Excellent writing, proofreading, and editorial skills
BA or equivalent experience in journalism, including familiarity with Associated Press style
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, including with on- and off-site collaborators
A proven history of creative work and idea generation, preferably in a cinema or culture-related field
Familiarity and comfort with major social media channels
Familiarity and comfort with a Mac-based creative environment
Familiarity and comfort with content-management systems a plus
