Midwest Film Festival Presents Global Kaleidoscope Night at the Chicago Cultural Center

On Monday, August 25th, Midwest Film Festival (MFF) returns to the Claudia Cassidy Theater at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.) with a film lineup that will embark viewers on a cinematic journey around the world, all through the lens of Midwestern voices. MFF’s Global Kaleidoscope Night celebrates the richness of diverse cultures, showcasing films that aim to weave together the heartland’s untold connections to the wider world.

These short films, created and curated by Midwesterners, highlight the people, places, and traditions that tie individuals together, regardless of surface level differences. The evening’s offerings will include heartwrenching documentaries, stop motion animation experimental and conventional narratives that stretch from our own backyards to distant corners of the globe and foster a deeper appreciation for the tapestry of humanity’s cultural heritage.

Tickets range from $15 to $25, depending on availability and can be purchased at www.midwestfilm.com.

Ticketholders are invited to pre reception at Adamus Restaurant & Lounge (10 S. Wabash Ave.) from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. The event will then commence at 7:00pm at the Claudia Cassidy Theater kicked off by MFF’s Community Spotlight panel discussion. The Community Spotlight this month will shine on Patricia Andrews-Keenan, founder of Pigment International, a Black woman founded and led multi-media platform reporting on the art, people, issues, trends, and events shaping Black contemporary art and examining the linkages connecting historical and contemporary Black art.

Afterwards, audiences will be treated to a program of 7 short films featuring:

KHSARA by Dean Bushala

The Museum by Annette Elliot

Wind Walker by Daniel Simon Zhang

What I Am Today: Maa Maa Dei by Ian Szetho

Paper Flower by Joe Miñoso

A Bird Hit My Window and Now I’m a Lesbian by Carmela Murphy, AJ Dubler

IS IT LIKE, A DATE?!? by Eliana Pipes

As with all MFF Screenings, filmmakers will take to the stage to participate in a Filmmaker Q&A following their films to speak on their work. An After Party to cap the night is scheduled to take place at Emerald Loop Bar & Grill, 216 N Wabash Ave.

NK Gutiérrez, MFF Executive Director and moderator of both panels remarked on the event: “At the Midwest Film Festival, we are proud to champion the bold, diverse voices that shape Midwest cinema. This year, we’re especially excited to feature a work from Chicago Fire’s own Joe Miñoso — a celebrated actor who has stepped behind the camera to direct a deeply personal piece. Moments like this, in precarious times like these, when artists take creative risks and explore new facets of storytelling, embody the spirit of our festival and our city’s vibrant film community.”
