Malcolm and John David Washington Share with SCREEN about ‘The Piano Lesson’

Denzel must be proud. His two sons, Malcolm and John David, are collaborating on the dramatic feature film The Piano Lesson, which is arriving in theaters nationwide this week. Malcolm is behind the camera directing (with proud pop Denzel producing), while John David, is, as you would expect, in front of the camera… this time in an all-star cast which includes Samuel L. Jackson and Danielle Deadwyler.

SCREEN’s Dan Patton spoke with the sibling duo about The Piano Lesson as they were in town at the Chicago International Film Festival to share a special preview screening of the film.

Let’s hear what Malcolm has to say to Dan about what will resonate with audiences in The Piano Lesson…

Next up, John David talks with Dan about being directed by his brother, Malcolm, in this powerful piece of filmmaking…

The Piano Lesson centers on a battle brewing in the Charles Household. At the heart of the conflict stands a prized heirloom piano tearing two siblings apart. On one side, a brother (John David Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it. On the other, a sister (Danielle Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Samuel L. Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past.

Adapted from August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork, The Piano Lesson explores the intergenerational dynamics of identity, resilience and transcendence – revealing startling truths about how we perceive the past and who gets to define our legacy.  The film is directed and co-written by Malcolm Washington in his feature directorial debut. From Oscar nominated producers Denzel Washington and Todd Black, and featuring an all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu with Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins.
