Keanu Reeves Series ‘Devil in the White City’ Sets Spring Start Date, But Will It Film in Chicago or Toronto?

Keanu Reeves has Chicago buzzing about his new series The Devil in the White City, but will The Matrix star be filming in the Windy City, or heading to Canada? The eight-episode Devil has just announced a Spring 2023 start date for the highly anticipated and long awaited production. However, multiple sources tell SCREEN they expect the majority of the series to film in Toronto, despite the story being primarily set in Chicago. That being said, those sources also tell SCREEN that nothing is set in stone just yet, and we can expect more decisive details this Fall.

Two things are certain: 1. Keanu Reeves will executive produce and star in Devil in the White City. And 2. Keanu’s fellow executive producers will include Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorcese.

Based on the best-selling book by Erik Larson, Devil in the White City “tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious ‘Murder Castle’ built in the Fair’s shadow,” according to the official logline.

Here is everything else we know so far…

Executive Producers include Oscar Winner Leonardo DiCaprio

The series boasts some high-profile executive producers alongside Reeves, most notably Oscar winners Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. Other executive producers include writer and showrunner Sam Shaw, Rick Yorn and Jennifer Davisson (for Appian Way), Stacey Sher, Mark Lafferty, and series director Todd Field.

The project has been in various stages of development since DiCaprio bought the film rights to the book in 2010 and previously set it up as a feature at Paramount with Scorsese to direct, according to Deadline. In 2019, Hulu announced that it was developing the project as a big-budget series with DiCaprio and Scorsese executive producing.

DiCaprio also executive produced the Apple TV+ series Shining Girls, starring Elisabeth Moss, which filmed in Chicago last year.

Keanu Fans Rejoice!

Devil marks the first significant foray into television for Keanu Reeves. He previously co-starred on the Swedish comedy Swedish Dicks, which ran for two seasons and aired in the U.S. on Pop TV. Additional credits include guest appearances on web series Easy to Assemble and Interrogations Gone Wrong, and a cameo in the pilot for Fox’s short-lived Hollywood satire Action. He also voiced Ted in the animated Bill & Ted offshoot Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures.

Reeves’ recent film credits include Bill & Ted Face the Music, The Matrix Resurrections and the family fave DC League of Super-Pets, now in theaters…

Up next for for Keanu is his return as John Wick in the forthcoming sequel John Wick: Chapter 4, which is due out March 24, 2023.
