Ian Scott Answers Five Questions with SCREEN

Ready for hearty servings of Jay-Z, Jaws, and the best French Toast you’ve ever had? This one has it all! Chicago Recording Company’s Senior Sound Designer and Mixer Ian Scott answers Five Questions with SCREEN…

SCREEN: You’re a sound and music expert so we gotta ask, what’s your go-to karaoke song?

IAN: Sound and Music expert is going on my new business card. Thank you.

I’m actually really not into karaoke, but one time CRC was having a party and a wonderful copywriter friend of mine asked me to do a duet with her. I got up, ready for my inevitable standing ovation, only to find out I was to be the Jay-Z to her Alicia Keys for Empire State of Mind.  Now this was clearly HER go-to Karaoke song. They started my funeral arrangements before the second word of verse one…

SCREEN: Best summer vacation ever?

IAN: As an adult it has been Grand Turk. Small Island off the Turks and Caicos. Great combination of being able to relax and also get some adventure scuba diving. I grew up on Jaws though, and even though I know Reef Sharks aren’t dangerous, I still try to turn into an octopus blending in with the coral when I see one.

SCREEN: Worst decision you made in college?

IAN: Worst decision was probably when I decided to playfully push a friend of mine into a snowbank on a not exactly sober walk back to the dorms. When I kneeled down to tie my boot, she used the opportunity to enact her revenge by picking up a pile of snow to smash on my head. That snow was actually a large piece of ice with some dusting of snow around it. There was blood.

SCREEN: CRC has always been in the heart of the indie music scene so we gotta ask, give us a song or band we would love that nobody has heard of yet!

IAN: Hahaha… I am very far removed from being cool enough to answer that question. I do recommend giving Halsey’s new record that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross produced several listens though. If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. Pretty sure you’ve heard of them though.

[Editor’s Note: here’s a quick track from that Halsey album Ian is recommending to you]

SCREEN: Can you cook? What’s your go-to dish?

IAN: I am a solid B-minus at cooking up some breakfast. Maybe the occasional A when making French Toast. My wife’s main creative outlet is cooking so I am waaaaaaaay out of practice and comparably wouldn’t even call what I do cooking.

BONUS QUESTIONS!

SCREEN: If you can only be a fan of one sports team…

IAN: The Bears. Because only through consistent disappointment and suffering can one appreciate moments of happiness and grow as a person.

SCREEN: If you could fix one thing, what would you fix?

IAN: It would be interesting to see what life would be like if people weren’t capable of violence. I mean, they would probably just argue louder or something but I would like to see what happens.

SCREEN: What actor would you cast to play you in the studio movie of your life?

IAN: Physically speaking I would say if someone took Tom Petty and Thom Yorke ‘s DNA and made a child…and that child grew up to be an actor… I’m casting that guy for sure.
