Group Creative Director Brooke Anderson Shares Her Super Bowl Ad Faves and Flops
In the ad world, Super Bowl Sunday is about anything but football. Or even Taylor Swift or Kendrick Lamar. It’s about the commercials! We were honored to have Brooke Anderson, Group Creative Director at Grey Midwest, stop by Screen to share her take on the advertising artistry on display during the big game…
SCREEN: What was your favorite spot of the night?
BROOKE: Nike “So Win”. Nike’s return to the game was as epic as expected. Powerful closeups of some of the biggest names in women’s sports with VO by Doechii, this one did what Nike does best: clever wordplay, inspiring visuals, all leading up to an end line that lands the whole thing and has you saying “damn, I wish I did that”.
SCREEN: What was your least favorite spot of the night or a spot you felt could have been more successful?
BROOKE: Jeep “Owner’s Manual”. Points for getting Harrison Ford but minus a million points for having him deliver this rambling monologue about freedom. I think? It was hard to tell. When coupled with the trite Americana visuals, I was certain it was going to turn parody around the time the dog showed up. The end line about him doing a Jeep ad when his last name is Ford was cute, should’ve made that the whole concept.
SCREEN: What would you like to see more or less of in terms of advertising in next year’s Super Bowl?
BROOKE: Celebrities for a purpose rather than celebrities for celebrities’ sake. Shout out to Hellman’s for recreating the famous scene from “When Harry Met Sally” in a way that actually tied to the product. The end line of “It hits the spot” made me smile.
