Five Questions with Yohance Brown
What do the superhero Blade, Cyndi Lauper, and the best burger ever have in common? They’re all right here as esteemed colorist Yohance Brown of the ColorNation roster stops by for a thoroughly entertaining round of Five Questions with SCREEN. Let’s get to it!
SCREEN: As a colorist, what is your favorite movie scene ever, visually speaking?
YOHANCE: My favorite movie scene would have to be the ‘Jenga Blocks’ Scene from The Big Short. There are two approaches to color in a film or documentary: one is to make the colors as beautiful and visually stimulating as possible; the other is to have the color serve the narrative without being distracting. The ‘Jenga’ Scene in The Big Short falls into the second category. The colors in this scene complement the storytelling and narrative, making it pleasing yet almost invisible…
SCREEN: What is your greatest fear?
YOHANCE: Ceasing to exist. (This got dark fast!)
SCREEN: If you could be a member of any musical group in history, what would it be?
YOHANCE: I would love to be a member of Toto because their music is timeless and their blend of rock and pop is both soothing and energizing. Their song “Africa” always puts me in a great mood and helps me stay focused and creative during long color correction sessions.
We love it, too, Yohance! Here is the classic hit for your listening pleasure…
SCREEN: Most famous person you’ve ever met?
YOHANCE: Cyndi Lauper. I color-corrected one of her music videos, and she was quite the character in the session.
SCREEN: One meal, one restaurant, and we’re buying. What will it be?
YOHANCE: It would have to be 4 Charles Prime Rib. I would get the 4 Charles Prime Rib Burger, well done with an egg and thick-cut bacon. I’ve never had it, but it looks delicious and is consistently voted the number one burger in NYC.
BONUS QUESTIONS!
SCREEN: Weekend getaway. Anywhere. Where to?
YOHANCE: Rick’s Cafe in Negril, Jamaica. It’s an iconic spot known for its stunning sunsets, live reggae music, and cliff diving. As Jamaica is my home country, it holds a special place in my heart. It’s also a great place to relax and have a beer with my dad.
SCREEN: What’s that TV show you’re a little embarrassed to admit you love to watch?
YOHANCE: A Business Proposal—it’s a popular Korean drama on Netflix. I enjoy watching the television version of Korean culture, especially the family dynamics and the reserved expressions of love and romance typical to the genre.
SCREEN: If you could play any superhero in a major motion picture, who would it be?
YOHANCE: I would love to play the vampire-hunting black antihero Blade from the Marvel Universe. He’s just all kinds of cool.
He certainly is! And here is one of his most memorable scenes from the movie franchise…
