Five Questions with SCREEN: Optimus Animation Director Luis Mayorga
What do Professor X, The Amazing Race, and a 180-day dry-aged steak have in common? They’re all right here as Optimus Animation Director Luis Mayorga stops by for a thoroughly entertaining round of Five Questions with SCREEN. Let’s get to it!
SCREEN: What is your most prized possession?
LUIS: A 1940 silver coin keychain my dad gave me over 20 years ago. Since I got it, it’s never been apart from me over time it’s become a part of my everyday life. It feels as a reminder family is always around.
SCREEN: If you could be any superhero, who would it be?
LUIS: There are way too many superheroes out there saving the world, but I’d pick Professor X from X-Men. In the post-production world, mind-reading would be the ultimate superpower. Imagine knowing exactly what clients want before they change their minds, or understand what they need before they do. Now, that would be an amazing super power! Haha.
Luis (and you!) will enjoy this Professor X mashup…
SCREEN: Worst job ever?
LUIS: Back in high school, my older sister got me a part-time job as a banquet server at a hotel. The pay was great for a teenager, but standing for 12 hrs shifts with no real breaks was brutal. That job definitely gave me a new appreciation for anyone in hospitality.
SCREEN: Your favorite commercial ever?
LUIS: More recently, my favorite commercial has to be the Airbnb animated campaign. I’m obsessed with the little characters, the mini worlds, and how beautifully designed it all is. Studying stop-motion animation in college, it reminds me of building sets and animating small, contained worlds—there’s something magical about seeing all of the tiny details come to life.
Let’s take a look at Luis’ fave spot…
SCREEN: One meal, one restaurant, and we’re buying. What will it be?
LUIS: Easy. I’m booking us a flight to Spain. Because, ever since I watched a Netflix steak documentary, I haven’t stopped thinking about the 180-day dry-aged steak at Bodega El Capricho. As a huge steak fan, I’m super interested in trying this place. José Gordón treats his cows like royalty, and the steaks are like a flavorful treasure.
BONUS QUESTIONS!
SCREEN: Describe your perfect weekend!
LUIS: Two nights in Vegas with great friends and/or family. We would grab a Friday after work flight land just in time to minimum sleep, great dinner, drinks and hit the tables for a little gambling. The next day pool, sun bathing, more delicious food and just enough fun to keep things exciting. By Sunday, I’m heading home full of amazing stories and perfectly recharged for the week ahead.
SCREEN: What’s that TV show you’re a little embarrassed to admit you love to watch?
LUIS: The Amazing Race. I love every season, and can’t help teasing my wife about how I have actually been to more countries then she has. The show is also her favorite, she is who got me to see it in the first place. And keeps trying to convince me that we can go on the race, but there’s no way I could compete, the tasks can be challenging. I like the show because I love to travel myself, and it’s fun to see as the episodes move from country to country. Watching the teams hustle around the world and solving impossible challenges is very entertaining to watch every season.
SCREEN: Best advice you’ve ever received?
LUIS: “Always, bet on black.” Life’s too crazy to overthink, sometimes you just take a chance and see what happens. Haha.
