Five Questions with SCREEN: Ana Christian!
What do Vince Vaughn, Wonder Woman and the Goo Goo Dolls have in common? They’re all right here as Journeywork Entertainment co-owner and producer Ana Christian stops by for a thoroughly entertaining round of Five Questions with SCREEN. Let’s get to it!
SCREEN: So Ana, you’ve been chosen for the new season of Shark Tank. What are you pitching to the Sharks?
ANA: We have a corkboard on the wall of our office covered in script ideas – I’d pitch them the full slate of scripts and get them to invest in an entire film studio here in Chicago. They could help produce masterpieces such as “The Dogs of Gooseberry Park” and “Swamp and Circumstance”.
SCREEN: If you could play any superhero in a major studio movie, which would it be?
ANA: Either Black Widow or Wonder Woman – I prefer the idea of playing a heroine that is a good physical fighter over having supernatural or magical abilities.
This trailer is for you, Ana!
SCREEN: Most famous person you’ve ever met?
ANA: I’d have to say my “most famous person” interaction would be when I sat ten rows behind Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn at a Notre Dame football game – I felt like I really got to know the backs of their heads after three hours of staring at them!
Let’s take a quick trip back to 2013 when Chicago’s very own Vince Vaughn and his pal Owen Wilson starred in The Internship…
SCREEN: Your favorite project you’ve ever worked on?
ANA: It would have to be a tie between Good Guy With a Gun and Single Car Crashes. They were the first features that my husband and I collaborated on (with me editing, him color grading and us post-producing together) and were the foundation for us starting our company, Journeywork Entertainment. These were both edited out of the second bedroom of our apartment and are such a landmark transition point in our careers. Both of these films were also such special collaborations with the filmmakers and I’ve become lifelong friends with both John Mossman and Brittani Ward as a result of each of those films. I’ve never felt more empowered to share my creative voice and take real ownership of a project. I’ll be forever grateful to both of them for taking a chance on me and trusting me with such personal and important pieces of art.
Here’s a look at the trailer for Single Car Crashes…
SCREEN: Your favorite birthday gift you’ve ever received?
ANA: Goo Goo Dolls concert tickets – it’s now become a tradition for my husband and I to go see them every summer when they come to Chicago and we even picked one of their songs for our wedding dance. (Gross, I know!)
Here’s the beloved band live at Stagecoach earlier this year…
BONUS QUESTIONS!
SCREEN: What’s your favorite color? Why is it your favorite?
ANA: Green – it’s the color of grass and trees and spring/summer. It’s the color of being awake and alive.
SCREEN: Your go-to karaoke song?
ANA: Elephant Love Medley from Moulin Rouge – it’s so ridiculous and over-the-top that it’s always going to be a crowd-pleaser whether you’re too drunk to sing it well or not. Plus it’s like a 12-for-1 karaoke special since you get to hit so many different songs in one go!
SCREEN: Best advice you’ve ever been given?
ANA: “The perfect is the enemy of the good” – As a perfectionist myself, I need to constantly remind myself that “done and good” is better than “never-finished” and it’s also advice I try to give to my collaborators when I see them start to spin their wheels on a project. Especially in editorial where you can keep picking at an edit endlessly, it’s important to know when to be done before all of the perfectionist tinkering starts making things worse rather than better.
