Five Questions with Highdive Creative Director Chip Kelly

What do Jamie Foxx, Alabama football and a beautiful bed of roses have in common? They’re all right here as Highdive Creative Director Chip Kelly stops by for a thoroughly entertaining round of Five Questions with SCREEN. Let’s get to it!

Your favorite commercial ever (not produced by you or your team)?

CHIP: The Sony ‘Balls’ spot is my all-time. I think it exemplifies a lot of what we aim for as creatives. It’s arresting in its simplicity. Truly, like no other.

Let’s take a look at this iconic spot from 2005…

SCREEN: Most famous person you’ve ever met?

CHIP: Jersey Mike’s is a client and we work with Danny DeVito a lot. He’s an absolute gem of a human being. Hilarious, humble. The exact same guy you see on the screen, which I love. Jamie Foxx if I can shoutout another. An incredible storyteller and talented beyond belief. I’ve never laughed harder than being on set with him.

Let’s enjoy some laughs with Jamie Foxx here…

SCREEN: Chip, what is your most prized possession?

CHIP: The 12½ years I got to spend with my dog Sawyer. No material thing will ever come close.

SCREEN: What is your favorite restaurant on the planet? What do we order when we go?

CHIP: Oof. That’s a tough one. Because it’s top of mind and a favorite, Le Bouchon Chicago. Unpretentious and delicious. The escargot, foie gras and tartare are must-have. They make a great paper plane.

SCREEN: Favorite sports team?

CHIP: I’ve been an Alabama football fan since I was a kid. My Dad and I have been going to games for over 30 years. It’s a longstanding tradition that I cherish. Roll Tide baby.

Chip and his Dad will thoroughly enjoy this montage of Bama football highlights…

BONUS QUESTIONS!

SCREEN: Best advice you ever received?

CHIP: You can’t steer a boat by looking back at the wake. Seems obvious. I suspect it takes a lifetime of practice.

SCREEN: Do you have a unique hobby or special talent you care to share?

CHIP: Growing roses is a recent-ish hobby. I’m more of the gardener’s assistant, but we’ve managed to keep them alive. It’s an excuse to be outside, cultivate a living thing, and return some patience to an ever-impatient world.
