Editor Joe Clear, Wild Gift, The Colonie Team Up for SMA with Music Video

Take a moment to enjoy a terrific tune, then spend many moments taking in the vital cause behind it. The Colonie Editor Joe Clear recently partnered with the production company Wild Gift on a music video for singer/songwriter James Ian called Spaces. While immersing you in the dulcet tones of this beautiful tune and stunning visuals, the piece also draws attention to the Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) community.

“I think the message of the song and how the SMA community came together to have the track produced and the video made will resonate most with viewers,” Clear shared with SCREEN.

Let’s take a listen and look at this impactful and impressive music video…

The Colossal Cause Behind Spaces

1 in 4 adults in the U.S. are living with a disability, yet this community is often underrepresented or misrepresented in the media and on social media. Spaces is a first-of-its-kind collaboration that aims to harness the universal language of music to elevate the many voices of the disability community and recognize the real talents and achievements of these individuals. Everyone deserves to be seen and heard, and we are all creating our own unique spaces and experiences in this world.

To join in the movement, you can share about the spaces you’ve created on social media with the hashtag #CreateSpaces.

The Creative Approach

Spaces was developed from beginning to end with members of the Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) community. The song was written and performed by singer/songwriter James Ian, the music video was directed by Hollywood consultant and filmmaker Dominick Evans, and the Spaces album art was created by artist Zarek Elizondo, all of whom are living with SMA.

As for editor Joe Clear, “My creative approach was to edit the performance first and then find those moments where the B-roll worked best within the edit.”

“This project was created by and for members of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) community,” Joe shared with SCREEN. “I am very proud to be apart of it and so is everyone else that contributed to getting this done.”
