Director Jon Silver Gets Personal in His Latest Feature Film ‘The Premiere’

The Premiere is a new comedy-drama film by Chicago filmmaker Jon Silver. The feature is now in the final stretch of post-production after wrapping production throughout The Windy City this Spring. Jon stopped by SCREEN to share some insights on his fourth feature film as he targets a Fall festival debut for The Premiere.

The Premiere is based on my life and the experiences of my close friends in the theater and film world,” Silver shared with SCREEN. “It’s one of the most honest stories I have ever told and I hope it sheds light on the mental health struggles of anyone in the performing arts.”

The Premiere is the story of a young filmmaker Jacob, who juggles countless challenges on the night of his first movie premiere, including high-expectations, celebrity appearances, and imaginary delusions projected onto the screen. On that one evening, Jacob is hounded by nuisances and phantom appearances of a troubling future. The pressure to be successful is mounting, and the tension is growing with every complaint and problem to solve, and all the while a mysterious celebrity appearance is looming.

“Audiences will probably best relate to how topical the story is, as fans of film but also theater-attendees,” Silver declared to SCREEN. “The film industry is being hit by many attacks, both internal and external. Between Covid, AI, Streaming platforms, Politics, the whole experience is being affected, from filmmaking to the theaters themselves. This story not only focuses on some of the ironic realities of the film world, but it also expresses the struggles of young artists, especially those who are under pressure to succeed immediately.”

The Premiere filmed throughout Chicago from last November through March of this year. Locations included one of the city’s most revered historic theaters, the Music Box Theatre.
