Colorist Calvin Bellas Answers Five Questions with SCREEN

What do Coldplay, the superhero Static Shock, and the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago have in common? They’re all right here as colorist Calvin Bellas of Reid Brody’s collective ColorNation stops by SCREEN for a thoroughly entertaining round of Five Questions with SCREEN. Let’s get to it!

SCREEN: Thanks for stopping by, Calvin! As a colorist, what is your favorite movie ever, visually speaking?

CALVIN: Swan Song with Mahershala Ali on Apple TV+. The entire film. It hits my aesthetic to a T. One of my favorite films hands down. Locations, PD, costume, cinematography, and color all work so well together. A lot of the films color palette is already in my apartment…

SCREEN: What is your most prized possession?

CALVIN: The 5.1 sound system in my office. Hoping to make it 5.1.2 because why not listen to tunes in atmos while grading. I. Love. Music.

SCREEN: On that note, Calvin… If you could be a member of any musical group in history, what would it be?

CALVIN: Dang that’s tough…. I’ll go with Coldplay, that would be a fun tour.

Ok Calvin, here’s a clip from what life on the tour with Coldplay would be like…

SCREEN: One meal, one restaurant, and we’re buying. What will it be?

CALVIN: Naked Dog, Greenpoint Brooklyn. Glass of Barbara, pesto bruschetta, beef ravioli, tap out with some creme brûlée with Maine blueberries on top. Trust me.

SCREEN: Most famous person you’ve ever met?

CALVIN: Met Russell Simmons but most notable was the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Patrick Manning. My school went on a field trip and there was a photo taken of me with him that ended up in the paper. Looked very official, 4-year-old me haha.

BONUS QUESTIONS!

SCREEN: If you could play any superhero in a major motion picture, who would it be?

CALVIN: Let me know if there is ever a live-action Static Shock film that needs an actor and im here for it.

Here’s a mashup of Static Shock highlights for Calvin and our readers…

SCREEN: Weekend getaway. Anywhere. Where to? Why?

CALVIN: Right now? Trip home to Trinidad and Tobago. Carnival season. Finish the weekend on Tobago relaxing with family.

SCREEN: What is your greatest fear?

CALVIN: Not having a place to call home.

SCREEN: What’s that TV show you’re a little embarrassed to admit you love to watch?

CALVIN: Hahaha, probably Harlem. I binged the first season for sure. Its hilarious.
