Cinematographer Christopher Rejano Shares His Super Bowl Faves

In the ad world, Super Bowl Sunday is about anything but football. Or even Taylor Swift or Kendrick Lamar. It’s about the commercials! We are honored to have acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Rejano stop by Screen to share his take on the advertising artistry on display during the big game…

SCREEN: What was your favorite spot of the night?

CHRISTOPHER: For me during the Super Bowl it always comes down to what message is being put out there with the money spent for airtime. I’m actually picking two spots this year. Nike ‘So Win’ for bringing forward and celebrating women athletes and Dove ‘These Legs’ for encouraging new ways to spark body confidence conversation with young girls in sports. The message in both of these spots is particularly relevant in today’s world and as a girl dad these messages are important to me…

SCREEN: What was your least favorite spot of the night or a spot you felt could have been more successful?

CHRISTOPHER: I had a really hard time deciding which spot was unsuccessful. Most had their merits but if I had to pick something that stood out I think Angel Soft’s ‘Potty-tunity’ was kind of a bust. I think even most streaming apps have a pause button right?

SCREEN: What would you like to see more or less of in terms of advertising in next year’s Super Bowl?

CHRISTOPHER: I think that there is still room for more Asian/Pacific Island representation in commercials. I also think that while it’s great that there are so many celebrity appearances it’s always nice to see a working actor not of celebrity status in a successful ad.

SCREEN: Any final words here, Christopher?

CHRISTOPHER: I think comedy was a massive part of this year’s commercials which is great because a lot of us need a laugh break lately. I also want to point out that there was a couple of funny body hair/body part spots like Coffee Mate, Little Caesars and Pringles that I can only attribute to the rise of the body horror genre. Haha!
