Chicago VFX Guru Ryan Urban Lands Emmy Nomination for Netflix’s ‘The Residence’

Chicago’s VFX guru Ryan Urban will be jetting over to Los Angeles this weekend with an esteemed team of VFX pros… and Emmy hopefuls. Ryan is among those nominated for Special Visuals Effects in a Single Episode, heading into this weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies. NEXODUS joined a talented group of VFX vendors providing visual effects to Netflix’s gripping new murder mystery series, The Residence, produced by Shondaland and created by Paul William Davies.

Recognized for his work on the hit whodunnit, murder mystery Netflix series, The Residence, Ryan Urban VFX Supervisor led his portion of work at Nexodus for the show under Production Side VFX Supervisor Seth Hill and VFX producer – and Chicago native – Tesa Kubicek, whose Windy City credits include a stint at The Mill and the Wachowskis series Sense8.

“I was thrilled to be reunited working with Tesa again on a project,” Ryan shared exclusively with SCREEN. “We previously worked together on Netflix’s sense8 for the Wachowskis and a handful of our artists overlapped with her on Netflix’s live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Even more thrilled we got to connect on a job where our work scored us both an Emmy nomination!”

Let’s take a look at the trailer for The Residence…

NEXODUS completed 328 visual effects shots spanning all eight episodes. The work encompassed a diverse range of invisible VFX, including makeup enhancements, set extensions, matte paintings, editorial fixes, and more, all executed to maintain the seamless realism of the series.

The Residence is streaming on Netflix.
