Chicago Creative Community Celebrates Retirement of Optimus President Tom Duff
The Chicago advertising and post-production community gathered in force this evening at downtown venue Tunnel to celebrate a defining figure in the city’s creative landscape: longtime Optimus president Tom Duff, who is officially stepping down and entering retirement.
The vibrant event brought together colleagues, clients and collaborators to toast Duff’s expansive career and honor the immense mark he has left on Optimus and the Midwest production industry as a whole.
Heartfelt Tributes and Personal Reflections
Throughout the evening, friends and longtime collaborators took the mic to share stories spanning decades of creative partnership, camaraderie, and hustle.
The slate of speeches included touching remarks from Cutters Studios Managing Director Craig Duncan, editor Craig Lewandowski, and former Leo EVP and Dictionary Films Managing Director Chris Rossiter. All speakers paid tribute to Duff’s steady guidance, sharp instincts, and lasting legacy in the Chicago production market, highlighting Tom’s presence not just as a business leader, but as an extended member of the creative family.
When Tom stepped up to speak, the room was treated to a sincere, reflective address. Duff kept the spotlight firmly on the people around him, expressing profound gratitude to the entire Optimus team, agency partners, and peers who joined him on the journey. He walked the crowd through several of his favorite memories, reflecting on early milestones, legendary late-night edits, and the resilient evolution of Optimus into a creative powerhouse.
Here a few candid photos from the evening…

“People First, Competitors Later”
While the speeches were filled with laughter and nostalgic anecdotes, a single, resounding message anchored every tribute throughout the night: Tom Duff was, above all else, a tireless booster of everyone in the room.
In an industry often driven by high stakes and fierce market rivalries, Duff built his reputation on an entirely different foundation. Speakers repeatedly praised his belief in prioritizing community and genuine relationships ahead of short-term business interest, living out a clear philosophy of “people first, competitors later.”
Whether opening doors for young talent breaking into the industry, cheering on the success of rival houses across the city, or mentoring editors and producers through challenging career transitions, Duff was widely recognized as a bridge-builder who saw the Chicago market as a community to be elevated together rather than a zero-sum game.
A Lasting Legacy
The retirement celebration at Tunnel was less a formal goodbye and more an exuberant affirmation of Duff’s career ethos. As the night wound down with toasts and embraces across generations of Chicago creatives, the sentiment across the room was unmistakable: while Tom Duff may be stepping back from his day-to-day duties at Optimus, the culture of generosity, loyalty, and community leadership he championed will continue to guide the city’s creative community for years to come.
