Chicago-Based Micro Vertical Series ‘Love Street’ Takes Flight

Chicago filmmaker Missy Greenberg made a micro series that’s proving vertical storytelling doesn’t have to look cheap even though it was shot on two crew iPhones.

Greenberg is a self-taught director and writer behind Love Street, a new romcom micro series built for the vertical, scroll-first world of social media. Loosely inspired by her own life, the series follows the messy, funny, painfully familiar terrain of modern dating — all six episodes are under two minutes each.

What makes Love Street interesting isn’t just what’s on the screen. It’s what it took to get there.

As a single mom working with a real budget — meaning barely any budget at all — Greenberg approached the project the way most indie filmmakers think about but find it challenging to pull off: she made it work anyway.

The entire series was shot in a single day, mostly one location, using nothing more than two iPhones and lean lighting equipment. The lead actors were paid a combined total of $100. Everyone else on set, from the skeleton crew to the sizable cast, was there because Greenberg called in favors, leaned on relationships, and convinced people to believe in her project. Even the location came together because of the generous owners: the series was filmed at a Lincoln Park bar that shares its name with the show itself — Love Street — which donated the space for the shoot. From the first script draft to going live, it took a total of three months.

That thread runs through the whole project. Love Street was written and directed by someone who has actually lived the experience, which gives the series an authenticity that’s hard to manufacture. The heartbreak feels specific because it probably happened to someone in the room.

Vertical micro series are usually associated with big platforms, bigger budgets, and formulaic content. Love Street flips that assumption. It’s proof that the vertical format can take one on a love story journey — one with structure, character, and emotion with next to no budget.

Love Street is an especially timely example for anyone watching the explosion of vertical content and wondering whether quality can survive the format’s demand for speed and volume.

Greenberg’s motto is if you’re willing to write something worth telling, you can be resourceful enough to get it filmed.

Love Street is now streaming on Instagram (@thenotfromheremedia), YouTube (@notfromheremedia), and TikTok (@notfromheremedia).
