Blackhouse, JFI Highlight Sundance 2021

There are plenty of ways to enjoy this year’s Sundance Film Festival from the comforts of your own home, and SCREEN is here to provide you with a few highlights to add to your calendar this weekend.

Libresco Leads Panel of Jewish Female Filmmakers

Earlier today, leading female Jewish non-fiction filmmakers discussed the role of Jewish values, identity, culture, and feminism, as drivers and subjects for their groundbreaking documentary films. The panel featured Nancy Buirski, Judith Helfand, Roberta Grossman, Amy Ziering, Jennifer Fox, and moderator Caroline Libresco, and was presented by the Jewish Film Institute.

The Blackhouse Is Now Open

The Blackhouse Foundation and Presenting Sponsor Facebook kick off its programming at the virtual 2021 Sundance Film Festival on Sundance Festival Village Digital Main Street. The Festival will take place from January 28 through February 3 online and in communities across the country.

2021 stands out as a revolutionary moment for The Blackhouse Foundation. This year, due to the continued impact of Covid-19, access to programming at The Blackhouse has been democratized with multiple days of programming broadcast on multiple social media channels, and via the festival’s virtual platform. If visiting The Blackhouse at Sundance has ever been an item on your bucket list, this year you can check it off your list by attending on your phone or computer! The Blackhouse programming will run virtually from January 28 through February 3 via Hopin.

Provocative Conversations Abound

Today at the Cinema Café, you can tune in for a thought-provoking conversation between directors Shaka King (the Midwest-made JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH) and Questlove (SUMMER OF SOUL… OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED). And Friday also offers this year’s Native Forum Celebration, where Sundance will be honoring the Sundance Institute’s Indigenous Program fellows, grantees, and alumni. During the event, they will announce the latest recipient of their Merata Mita Fellowship, named in honor of the late Māori filmmaker. Click here to RSVP for these highly anticipated events.

All of Sundance’s Talks & Events are free and open to attendees all over the world, so make sure to pop these into your schedule. Click here for the full schedule of virtual festivities and discussions available through February 3rd at the Sundance Film Festival.
