Big Win for BBDO Chicago
Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill + Bar has named BBDO Chicago as its new creative agency of record, concluding a competitive review aimed at reigniting consumer momentum in an increasingly volatile casual dining sector. The news of the account shift was first reported by Ad Age.
The move marks the end of Applebee’s multi-year creative relationship with Grey, an agency partnership that delivered notable pop-culture milestones. Most prominently, the brand captured national attention with its viral integration into country artist Walker Hayes’ smash hit “Fancy Like,” which celebrated the chain’s date-night appeal and sparked an organic social media sensation. However, amid shifting macroeconomic conditions, rising food costs, and cautious consumer spending across the restaurant industry, the franchised chain is retooling its creative playbook to protect foot traffic and drive sustained sales growth.
The account review was initiated under Chief Marketing Officer Michelle Chin, who stepped into the leadership role earlier this year. Tasked with modernizing the legacy restaurant brand while honoring its neighborhood heritage, Chin led the process to identify an agency partner capable of bridging traditional brand loyalty with modern, culturally resonant storytelling. BBDO Chicago emerged victorious, entrusted with leading brand positioning, national broadcast advertising, digital campaigns, and social activations.
For Applebee’s, the appointment comes at a pivotal juncture. Casual dining brands across the country are navigating fierce competition from both fast-casual alternatives and value-focused quick-service operators. Inflation-weary diners have grown increasingly selective, seeking demonstrable value and compelling everyday occasions rather than standard promotional discounting. While Applebee’s has long leaned on enduring staples such as its signature “Neighborhood Drink of the Month” (most notably the Dollarita) and value-oriented appetizer deals, the company now requires a nuanced creative narrative that emphasizes quality, connection, and everyday accessibility.
BBDO Chicago brings extensive experience in food, retail, and packaged goods, with a proven track record of steering legacy consumer brands through category transformations. The agency will be responsible for refreshing the brand voice to engage younger demographic cohorts, particularly Gen Z and millennial families, without alienating the core guest base that has frequented the restaurant for decades.
Industry observers will be watching closely to see how BBDO Chicago reinterprets the iconic “Eatin’ Good in the Neighborhood” positioning in an era dominated by omnichannel ordering, loyalty rewards apps, and short-form video content. With casual dining traffic facing continued headwinds, Applebee’s is placing a substantial bet that BBDO Chicago can craft a distinctive, durable message capable of transforming casual diners into frequent visitors. New creative work from the agency is expected to debut in the coming months across linear, streaming, and digital platforms.
