Exclusive: ‘Train Dreams’ Director Clint Bentley

Director Clint Bentley swung for the fence when he made Train Dreams, premiering November 21 on Netflix. Adapting a beloved novella, relying heavily on narration, spanning generations and casting an Aussie (Joel Edgerton) to portray an American Pacific Northwesterner, the filmmaker had his work cut out for him. By all accounts, he hit a home run.

According to rogerebert.com’s Brian Tallerico, Train Dreams is not only “magnificent” but it also showcases “the best work of (Joel Edgerton’s) remarkable career.”

Train Dreams tells the story of Robert Grainier (Edgerton), “a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th Century,” according to IMDb. The film is based on a novella by Denis Johnson.

Bentley spoke with ScreenMag on the red carpet of the Chicago International Film Festival before the film screened at The Music Box Theater in October. When asked to describe Train Dreams’ impact on audiences, he said that one viewer watched it and told him, “I just appreciate my life so much.”
