AppleTV Sci-Fi ‘Dark Matter’ Starring Jennifer Connelly, Joel Edgerton Wraps This Weekend

The highly anticipated blockbuster series Dark Matter has been a welcome addition to the booming television industry in Chicago. The show began filming last October, with Top Gun star and Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly and Obi Wan-Kenobi star Joel Edgerton leading the way. The first season will consist of nine episodes. Sources tell SCREEN the series is expected to wrap principal photography this Saturday, April 22nd.

Sources also tell SCREEN that filming has been smooth from start to finish, with the team spanning the city and beyond. Dark Matter locations featured a jaunt up north for an epic blizzard scene at Montrose Harbor, to Downtown Chicago, and then outside the city limits, including a stint in nearby Gary, Indiana.

A release date has not yet been announced, which is to be expected, given the extensive amount of post-production awaiting this ambitious sci-fi thriller franchise.

Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who, while walking home on the streets of Chicago one night, is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the multiverse of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of mind-bending realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.

Jennifer Connelly Leads Cast

The Oscar winner plays Daniela, Dessen’s wife. Dark Matter marks Connelly’s latest TV role after starring in TNT’s Snowpiercer, which is ending after four seasons. In 2002, Connelly won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Alicia Nash in Ron Howard’s biopic A Beautiful Mind.

And of course, Jennifer Connelly co-starred in the blockbuster of the year so far, alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun. Here’s an entertaining clip with Connelly from the box office record breaker…

Meet Connelly’s Co-Star Joel Edgerton

Connelly will be joined by Australian actor Joel Edgerton, who also serves as executive producer. He is best known for his appearance in the Star Wars films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith as a young Owen Lars, a role he reprised in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

If you’re new to Edgerton, here is a quick rundown of his big screen highlights…

Spider-Man Producer at the Helm

Apple is looking to Matt Tolmach to executive produce the series. Tolmach has produced blockbuster hits Jumanji and Venom, as well as the recent Marvel Studios thriller Morbius.

Tolmach is an executive producer on Spider-Man: No Way Home

Most notably, Tolmach served as executive producer on the latest webslinging excursion from Marvel Studios, Spider-Man: No Way Home, starring Tom Holland, as well as its predecessors Spider-Man: Far from Home and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tolmach was also a producer on the Andrew Garfield iterations of the superhero franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014.

Sony and Tolmach have had their sights on bringing Dark Matter to life since 2014, when it made a $1.25 million deal for the book based on Blake Crouch’s 150-page partial manuscript, according to Deadline.

Dark Matter is based on the novel by Blake Crouch, who is writing and showrunning the series. He will exec produce alongside Edgerton, Tolmach and David Manpearl for Matt Tolmach Productions. Jakob Verbruggen (Invasion) will direct the first three episodes.
