Anedra Kerr is Free Spirit Media's Interim Executive Director
July 22, 2020 by Andrew Schneider
Free Spirit Media has found its new leader. Anedra Kerr will serve as the Interim Executive Director of the Emmy-winning organization, which is dedicated to media literacy and creative workforce development for under-resourced youth communities in Chicago. The change in leadership comes after Free Spirit Media Founder Jeff McCarter was placed on administrative leave following a series of allegations, including "many incidents of tokenism, racism, sexism, misogyny, adultism, and other forms of discrimination towards participants and staff members," according to a June 22 petition signed by alumni and former employees of the organization.
"Anedra will serve as the lead staff member for the organization and point person for the board," Stacey Bolton, Chairman of Free Spirit Media's Board of Directors, said in a statement. "We are confident Anedra will provide youth-centered staff and partner support and look forward to having you get to know her."
Meet Anedra Kerr
Anedra joins FSM with experience from the Francis W. Parker School, where she served as Chief Advancement Officer and provided oversight of development, communications and admissions, and executed philanthropic efforts. She has also led executive level programming and fund raising positions with after school matters, advocate health care and junior achievement.
Kerr also served as Chief Development Officer at After School Matters for more than two years, where she has led advancement efforts and launched the largest fundraising effort in the history of ASM. During the course of the prior 15 years, Anedra worked in several different executive-level positions at the charitable foundation of Advocate Heath Care. On a personal note, Anedra is a lifelong Chicagoan and mother of two, and both of her parents were Chicago Public Schools (CPS) elementary school principals.
As for the future of FSM Founder McCarter, "Jeff McCarter remains on leave as our investigation is ongoing, and we will continue to provide you with updates as we have them," Bolton said in her statement released today.
