When Will THE BATMAN Land In Chicago?
August 24, 2020 by Screenmag
THE BATMAN, starring Robert Pattinson, is set to resume shooting in early September in the U.K., but will this blockbuster studio production also be making a stop in Chicago in the near future? Sources tell SCREEN director Matt Reeves and his team are indeed expected to film scenes for THE BATMAN in Chicago this fall, and the anticipated target date is late October.
When, Where, What
While THE BATMAN is expected to land in Chicago, do not expect filming for months on end, with epic car chases and toppling buildings, as was the case when Christopher Nolen filmed extensively in downtown proper for his 2008 hit THE DARK KNIGHT. The Chicago shot list for this latest Caped Crusader iteration will be relatively succinct, with a filming schedule expected to last around one to two weeks, with at least a month of pre-production leading up to that shoot. Sources tell SCREEN to expect most of the filming to be exterior shots downtown, perhaps amid iconic Chicago landmarks such as the Thompson Center or Board of Trade. As for the scale of these shots, and whether A-Listers Robert Pattinson and Colin Farrell will be making the trip, those details will become much clearer in the coming weeks.
It will be a much quicker trip through Chicago in 2020 for the iconic superhero than it was in 2007-2008, but it's a trip nonetheless.
Much Like the Future of Gotham... Nothing Is Certain
The comic book adventure was roughly seven weeks into production when filming was halted in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Insiders estimate the movie has approximately three months of material left to shoot, and much of that filming is expected to take place in the U.K.
Of course, given the fast-changing nature of the pandemic, any plans for THE BATMAN, including shooting locations, can change course or delay for several more weeks or even months. As for Chicago, today marks the start of a critical week for the TV and film production industry, as the FX series FARGO resumes production at Cinespace Studios to wrap up shooting its fourth season. Hopefully all goes smoothly and the city then forges ahead with the NBC series CHICAGO FIRE, CHICAGO PD, and CHICAGO MED firing back up in September, and then welcomes Robert Pattinson and THE BATMAN in October.
One Thing Is Certain: The New Trailer Is Epic
The comic book world was aflutter this weekend as Matt Reeves released a teaser trailer at DC Fandome, despite only 25 percent of the movie being shot before the COVID-19 pandemic. Take a look at this gritty and thrilling trailer, with Pattinson joined by co-stars Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon, Paul Dano’s creepy Riddler, the voice of Andy Serkis’ Alfred, and Colin Farrell's dramatic transformation as The Penguin:
