April 22, 2020 by Screenmag
Andy Grush has been composing for film and producing songs for over 20 years and has been with Yessian for 17 years. As half of the writing duo The Newton Brothers, they have scored more than 60 films and over 100 episodes of television, including the award-winning Netflix series, THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE. Andy co-scored with Danny Elfman on BEFORE I WAKE, and most recently helped Diane Warren and John Debney in the production of “I’m Standing With You," which was nominated for an Academy Award. Today, Andy stopped by for Five Questions with SCREEN:
SCREEN: What's the hardest you've ever laughed?
ANDY: I don’t know why, but in THE BIG LEBOWSKI, when he’s driving his car listening to CCR and smoking a joint and drinking a beer and watching someone in his rearview mirror and he drops the joint in his lap and it’s burning his junk and he pours the beer in his lap and then crashes the car. I have no idea why, but the first time I saw this scene I cried laughing and still remember laughing painfully hard at that scene. Incredible!!! Also, Chappelle has a lot of moments that ruin me with epic laughter!
SCREEN: Worst decision you made in college?
ANDY: Not participating in more musicals. I was in four or five, which was great, but passed on a lot of them and who knows why. Should have done all of them!
SCREEN: If you could appoint ANYONE to be President of the United States, who would it be?
ANDY: Warren Buffett as President and Charlie Munger as Vice President. And as for why: humility, economic prowess, sense of humor, and life experience.
SCREEN: What actor would play you in the movie of your life?
ANDY: Definitely Jeff Bridges cuz in my mind I’d want the movie to be a hybrid of THE BIG LEBOWSKI meets AGAINST ALL ODDS.
SCREEN: Is there a reality TV show that you're just a little embarrassed to admit you watch on the regular?
ANDY: Don’t really like reality tv... HOWEVER, I am a bit embarrassed that I really love GOSSIP GIRL. I can rewatch that show often. Love it!
SCREEN: Your favorite board game?
ANDY: Wavelength! It’s not an old school board game, but maybe a newer game. You basically rate the “severity” of something on a meter and then others have to guess on a number scale based on clues what it is. My description sounds TERRIBLE, but what i absolutely love about this game is that no matter how much we think we know, we don’t actually know because so many things are subjective and I love seeing that play out and hear why and how people think differently. People thinking differently is infinitely intriguing.
And we will close with that Academy Award nominated song "I'm Standing with You," which Andy worked on with Diane Warren and John Debney...
