RUN-DMC, Captain America, and a trip to Ireland for the Arancini Burger! Burrell VP and Digital Lead Charles Rasmussen answers Five Questions with SCREEN...
SCREEN: What has been your favorite "stay-at-home" activity over the past few weeks?
CHARLES: I stay busy as an actor and artist outside of my advertising life, so I’ve been working on my craft. Right now, painting fuels me. I’ve got about 20 new pieces from the past year and a half that I’m way overdue to share online. I’m lucky. I already had a fulfilling “stay-at-home” activity that has made this challenging time a little easier. You can see some of my old work here.
SCREEN: If you could be a member of any band in music history, what would it be?
CHARLES: Being part of a group that changed and shaped culture is exciting to me. While The Beatles and Nirvana come to mind, but I’m torn between Run-DMC in the early days of hip-hop and The Clash during the birth of punk rock. Both would be incredible. Can we fire up the DeLorean to 88 to help me decide?
SCREEN: Best summer vacation ever?
CHARLES: It was always a financial struggle growing up, so summer vacations weren’t part of my reality. Since then, I’ve been able to build a life that’s allowed me to travel and see the world. While it wasn’t during the summer, I did take my Mom on our first vacation together a few years back to Seattle. That was a special trip.
SCREEN: If you could play any superhero in a major motion picture, who would it be?
CHARLES: Great question! I feel like part of the reason I stay in shape and go to the gym is so I’m ready when Hollywood comes calling... When I was a kid, Captain America was my favorite superhero. My Mom even made me a costume. I doubt it fits anymore, but I think this childhood dream needs to come full circle. Move over, Chris Evans!
SCREEN: What is your biggest fear?
CHARLES: My biggest fear is “fear.” I believe one of the secrets to a great life is living courageously. Over the years, I’ve conditioned myself to act when I feel fear. It’s not easy, but acting on fear is when some of the best moments happen. Letting fear paralyze you into inactivity and mediocrity is frightening.
SCREEN: Best restaurant in Chicago? Best restaurant in any city OTHER than Chicago?
CHARLES: I’ve been cooking since I could walk. Part of me wants to invite you into my own kitchen, but let’s take you on an adventure! I had the privilege of experiencing Alinea here in Chicago. The preset menu was phenomenal and exceeded the hype. Outside of my hometown, let’s go all the way to Galway, Ireland to the Gourmet Offensive and order an Arancini Burger. It’s vegan and, even if you’re not, you’ll want a second.
SCREEN: What is inspiring you today?
CHARLES: All the creativity coming from COVID-19. While this is a challenging time for everyone, all the tools exist for us to create and share. While we’re all struck at home, let’s at least have some fun and inspire each other.
