Four Spirit Award Noms for GIVE ME LIBERTY
November 22, 2019 by Screenmag
The nominations for the 35th Independent Spirit Awards were just announced, and it was a huge day for a Midwest-made masterpiece. Shot in Wisconsin, critic's pick GIVE ME LIBERTY earned a whopping four Spirit Award nominations, including the coveted John Cassavetes Award nom for writer/producer Alice Austen, director Kirill Mikhanovsky, and their team.
For Chicago screenwriter and playwright Austen, GIVE ME LIBERTY is a breakthrough for an already successful writing career, which has included plays produced at theatre heavyweights Steppenwolf, Goodman, and Victory Gardens. This film is a tribute to years of perseverance and tenacity from Austen and director/editor Kirill Mikhanovsky.
"When we first created the project and wrote the script, we were selected for Film Independent's Fast Track. It is incredible to come full circle and get the news of these nominations," Austen told SCREEN. "The energy of extraordinary individuals made the film possible, and we will never forget their efforts and contributions. We want as many people as possible to see the film and believe these nominations will help make that happen."
Acting Noms for Spencer, Galust
GIVE ME LIBERTY's four nominations also highlighted their tremendous cast of newcomers, with Best Supporting Actress Lolo Spencer and Best Actor Chris Galust. "We are so happy that Chris Galust and Lolo Spencer have been nominated for their superb performances," Austen told SCREEN. "This is the first film for each - they are enormously talented hard-working actors and we hope this will be the beginning of wonderful careers for both of them."
The biggest win for GIVE ME LIBERTY was a nomination for the coveted John Cassavetes Award, presented to the best feature made for under $500,000 and given to the writer, director, and producer. Mikhanovsky also received a nomination for Best Editing.
