Free Spirit Media Receives $650,000 Grant From MacArthur Foundation

Chicago-based non-profit Free Spirit Media has received an $650,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

The grant is a part of the Jack Fuller Initiative. Jack Fuller, former Editor and Publisher of The Chicago Tribune and MacArthur Trustee, was a firm believer that good journalism and civic engagement are inextricably linked. His enthusiasm for new ideas and institutions is made possible by both new technologies and the imagination of a generation of young people growing up in a digital world.

This award is a vote of confidence for the vision and mission of Free Spirit Media to transform media and society through amplifying youth voices. We are so excited to be able to expand the work of The Real Chi, our experimental "learning newsroom" in North Lawndale for young adults interested in learning to produce high-quality, solutions-oriented, community journalism on the job.
