Dyke Delicious, Demolition and The Doc Talk Show#12: Lost and Found
February 20, 2018 by Jeff Spitz
Did you know that there is a Dyke Delicious film series that offers regular monthly screenings of films by and about lesbians? It happens from January to May on the second Saturday of the month at Chicago Filmmakers. Sharon Zurek, filmmaker, owner of Black Cat Productions and beloved editing instructor at Columbia College Chicago organizes the series in partnership with Reeling: Chicago’s LGBTQ+ International Film Festival. A Facebook page describes the events including screenings of classics, shorts, documentaries, premiers and local work. Sharon just presented a new documentary film about Angela Davis and Yuri Kochiyama titled MOUNTAINS THAT TAKE WINGS by C.A. Griffith and H.L.T. Quan. The filmmakers skyped in to talk with the audience.
Have you heard about the hauntingly beautiful and soon to be released feature documentary following neighbors over several years in a little known part of Chicago called The Area? This is a story about a land grab and bulldozers destroying people’s homes but not their will to oppose the powers that be. A classic Chicago “underdogumentary” speaks truth to power and amplifies voices that deserve our attention. Over the years I’ve seen memorable moments from this project with stunning cinematography by David Schalliol (Director, Cinematographer and Producer) and jaw dropping sequences crafted by Brian Ashby (Editor & Producer). Working together with their many associates as part of the Scrappers Film Group the filmmakers have attracted a large following and won support from IFP Documentary Labs Award; Graham Foundation; Richard H. Driehaus Foundation and City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. I can’t wait to see the finished film later this year. For now, Brian has agreed to present the opening 10 minutes at The Doc Talk Show – a free monthly non-fiction showcase that I curate, host and promote here in the Loading Doc.
