Three Chicago Web Series to Watch Immediately
February 10, 2017 by Mike McNamara
Now more than ever, we have television series, features and filmmaking careers being launched by way of the web series. Here are three Chicago-made web series for you to consider for immediate consumption.
ROOMMATE WANTED: Justin Casselle's commercial producer credits include work for DDB and RG/A but his new web series WHY DON'T YOU LIKE ME? is a delightful departure from the advertising grind. The series centers on a naive yet hopeful young woman who, with thirty days to move before she is evicted, meets with a series of eccentric roommates to find a place where she belongs. The series revolves around her anxiety to be liked as she meets with new roommates and how that anxiety manifests itself in all aspects of her life.
"This production means a lot to us," Casselle told SCREEN. "It was a our first major production outside of the advertising community so it was great to be able to craft a narrative and bring it to life. It’s step in the right direction we both want to take in furthering our careers creatively."
This web series Casselle co-directed with Adam Lieberman, whose freelance art director creds include work for FCB, DDB and Razorfish, was filmed over the course of a month last spring across the Wicker Park and Logan Square neighborhoods. WHY DON'T YOU LIKE ME? stars Jamila Tyler as Emily and the production team includes heralded cinematographer Jason Chiu, whose recent credits include festival fave HENRY GAMBLE'S BIRTHDAY PARTY.
Will there be a Season Two? Said Casselle, "As long as Emily wants to be liked, there’s always room for more episodes." Click here to enjoy all of Season One at whydontyoulikeme.net
IT'S NOT HIM: "In the midst of a world that is going through great change, IT'S YOU is a comedy about a coming together, a revolution of the self," writer and lead actor Cheryl Graeff told SCREEN as she introduced this new web series directed by Jeffrey Jon Smith. "It’s about a lovelorn spiritual healer who’s looking for love and goes back to in time to her younger self. IT'S YOU is quirky, thoughtful, absurd and embraces a diverse cast of characters." Binge on Season One starting right here:
SCIENCE FARE: Five mad scientists hell-bent on world domination and failing miserably? Bring it! MAD SCIENTISTS CONSORTIUM is the latest from co-directors Harry Bauer and Joe Cuomo. "MAD SCIENTISTS CONSORTIUM is a quirky and goofy ride with a little dark edge to it," Bauer told SCREEN. "If the selfish antics of the IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY gang mixed with THE ADDAMS FAMILY sounds like fun, you are in for a good time." Saunter into Season One right here:
