Jack Newell and Rebecca Fons Destroy Five Questions with SCREEN
August 23, 2017 by Screenmag
Wife-husband team Rebecca Fons and Jack Newell bring you the first-ever DESTROY YOUR ART this Friday, August 25th at 8 pm. Five films will be viewed and then destroyed in their entirety. When not destroying art, Jack runs the Harold Ramis Film School at Second City and Rebecca runs the Iowa Theater in Winterset, Iowa.
SCREEN: So you’re destroying some art this Friday?
REBECCA: Yes, DESTROY YOUR ART takes place Friday, August 25 at 8PM at Lost Arts, 1001 North Branch Street. We've invited five filmmakers (Nick Alonzo, Shayna Connelly, Lonnie Edwards, Matt Hyland and Aemilia Scott) to make short films - seven minutes or less - that we will screen and then destroy in their entirety. We're exploring the creative process as well as the audience experience - what changes when you're creating something you know is temporary; what does it feel like to watch something that is about to disappear? Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at destroyyourart.com or at the door, and include complimentary Baderbrau beer.
SCREEN: Best summer vacation ever?
JACK: This probably disqualifies me from being "a cool filmmaker, artist, dude," but from 1996 - 2003 I worked at a Boy Scout camp called Owasippe. So, those eight summers were the best summer vacations I ever had. Running around in the woods of Michigan, essentially unsupervised. I was in charge of the Scoutcraft area - which meant chopping down trees, starting fires, and building our own little Ewok Villages out of felled trees and rope. It ruled.
SCREEN: Celebrity crush?
REBECCA: Tom Cruise. He's America's movie star - he delivers great performances across all genres, he's a hard worker, he notoriously is super nice and generous on set to everyone and he keeps doing most of his own stunts. I met him briefly and it was like meeting a Beatle.
SCREEN: The hardest you’ve ever laughed?
JACK: That's like asking what's your favorite film - not fair! I can't even answer this - but I can tell you it was probably something dumb. All of the things that tickle you the most are the dumbest little things you never see coming. If it's too clever, too thought out, too smart, it might make you laugh but it doesn't take you to that uncontrollable place where you can't stop laughing.
SCREEN: If you could appoint ANYONE to be the President of the United States, who would it be and why?
REBECCA: Hillary Rodham Clinton, because she has a lifetime of experience and would do the job with grace and humility. But things are so batty in the White House that I'd appoint a ham sandwich at this point.
SCREEN: Do you have any tattoos?
[This answer was destroyed by Rebecca Fons and Jack Newell.]
