Beyond the Spot: Jeff McCarter
January 14, 2016 by Melissa Thornley
In the latest installment of BEYOND THE SPOT, we hear from Jeff McCarter, executive director/founder of Free Spirit Media, a non-profit that provides education, access and opportunity in media production to under-resourced youth in Chicago.
McCarter started in the industry as an art department intern on the film BACKDRAFT - an experience he called "huge" and fascinating. He continued working on features into his 20s and in story-telling until a series of happy accidents caused him to found FSM, realizing that there is so much opportunity in story-telling.
Tune in to WTTW Channel 11 tonight at 10:30 p.m. to see Free Spirit's documentary following Peace Builders on trips to Southeast Asia and Nicaragua. The Peace Exchange and its 11 young Chicagoans traveled the world to study how people and communities recover from violence to learn how to foster healing and peace in Chicago.
